Jam Cruise 7! : Jam Cruise 7 rocked the boat again this year with jams from Karl D, Lettuce, MMW, Galactic, Bonerama, The New Mastersounds, Garage A Trois, The New Deal, Michael Franti, PBS, ALO, Leftover Salmon, Keller Williams, Tea Leaf Green, The Lee Boys, Robert Walter, Bustle in your Hedgerow, Emmitt-Nershi, Martin Sexton and more guests than you can think of.

I took it pretty easy this year and just had a good ass time. Draggin around 15 pounds of gear on vacation isn't always the most fun so I just didn't do it. I still managed to snap a few good shots, but my photos by no means capture the ridiculiousness that occurred on Jam Cruise 7!!!

Lettuce - Tipitina's French Quarter 5/3/08 2am Jam : Lettuce
Tipitina's French Quarter
Late Night Jam 2am-6am
May 3rd

Lettuce, the seven-person all-star collective originally formed in 1992, returns to the funk jazz forefront with its third album, RAGE!, a hyper-charged outing of tunes that are equal parts artsy and party. The CD is a tantalizing tribute to funk music — paying homage to all stripes of funksters, including James Brown, Sly Stone, Herbie Hancock, Tower of Power, the Meters, Earth Wind & Fire, Parliament Funkadelics, J Dilla—music that reflects “our way of life,” says bassist Erick “E.D.” Coomes, who is joined in the groove onslaught by his co-ragers: keyboardist Neal Evans, saxophonists Sam Kininger and Ryan Zoidis, guitarists Eric Krasno and Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff, and drummer Adam Deitch.

Lettuce sprouted in the fertile environment of Berklee College of Music in Boston where all members met at a summer music program when they were in their teens. “I hate to sound cheesy, but I fully feel it was destiny that this band came together,” says Krasno. “We were all in the same place, all the same age. None of the friends I grew up with were into music like I was. Then I went to Berklee that summer, and all these guys were into music the way I was, and it happened that we were all playing the right instruments to put together a band.”

Led by guitarist and producer Eddie Roberts, the NMS records feature Bob Birch on Hammond, Pete Shand on bass and Simon Allen on drums. Bob retired from the live band this year, to be replaced by fellow Leeds keyboard wiz, 'GI' Joe Tatton. Over time, there have been various guests in the line up, last year the band started working with dazed genius, sax/flute player Rob Lavers, who appears on the latest album - 102% - and toured with the band in the first half of 2007.

Permilla Project 8x10 12/22/07 : Permilla Project
12/22/07
8x10
Baltimore, MD

Formed following the split of their group "Dr. Jones" in the winter of 2006 as a loose collaboration between Ryan “Perm” Jackson, a classically trained vocalist and guitar instructor, and drummer Sean “Milla” Miller, The Permilla Project played a series of freelance shows using the most talented sidemen available at the time. Along the way they ran into Pete, while he was working in the jazz fusion band "The Larks". He quickly saw the potential and joined up. But it wasn’t until January of 2007 that a fulltime line-up was in place. With the addition of Charlie, a trained luthier who spent last couple of years building guitars for Paul Reed Smith, on bass, and on occasion, sax virtuoso Everett Spells, The Permilla Project is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with! The group explores the boundaries of all music they have reverence for. This means anything is fair game and nothing is out of the question. Deeply rooted in experimental soul and funk rock with a jam groove, the group finds its traversement through different styles only complimented by the wealth of musicians it's members have shared the stage with over the years. These collaborations have been a blessing and have allowed the group to continually take their music in new and exciting directions. This is the essence of THE PERMILLA PROJECT.

The Cheaters are comprised of individuals as diverse as their sound. Guitarist Brett Wilmer and drummer Kevin Shook continue their 8 year collaboration together (both ex members of Malt Liquor Conspiracy and The Charm City Players) as a song writing powerhouse. Though each has their own unique style of play, not to mention technical excellence, together their sound is seamless. Plucking out the lows is bass guitarist Dave Wolf (Corey vs. Corey and The Davis Street Band), whos power stances and straight up rock and roll playing give a raw edge to the bands sound. Jason Bumpy Morton brings with him exceptional vocals, natural song writing abilities and a rallying stage presence. Collectively, The Cheaters create a sound that is distinct and irresistible.

3/31/07
9:30 Club Washington, DC

www.GalacticFunk.com

Galactic was born in the early '90s, after two Washington DC punks – guitarist Jeff Raines and bassist Robert Mercurio – relocated to New Orleans and found themselves intoxicated by the sounds of the scene that nurtured The Meters, Professor Longhair, the Neville Brothers and Dr. John. Armed with the rhythmic tradition of its hometown, the six-piece future funk outfit has spent over a decade tearing through venues across the world, leaving hordes of die-hard Galactic junkies in its wake. Constantly weaving modern and retrospective styles into its own trademark jazz-funk-rock fusion, Galactic has created a far-reaching canon informed by ongoing influence from a wide range of genres, including hip-hop, blues, pop, and electronica. Now, with six albums and countless landmark live shows to its credit, Galactic is once again headed to new territory—for now, as an instrumental powerhouse.

Gizmo has been a functional group for a few years now. We mysteriously popped up out of the ground somewhere and just started playing music in an old airplane hanger. The rest is history. Countless others have attempted to steal our thunder but none have yet to stop us from from infecting our music into the minds of others. With our combination of extremely powerful and catchy riffs mixed with melodic soaring vocals, what's not to fall in love with. Now is the time for a band of great calibre to make it's entry into the ears of America. Listen in, you'll want to hear more.

8x10 Baltimore, MD

Dear fans, friends & family,

As many of you have probably already heard the Written Prisms will be playing our last show on Friday, March 2nd at the 8x10 in Federal Hill, MD with our friends Seed Is …Despite all of the fun and wonderful experiences we've had over the last 6 years, we've all decided that it's time to pursue our personal and musical interests. We are grateful that we are able to do this in an amicable manner i.e. we don't hate each other. It's been a great run and we appreciate all the love and support you all have given us. Without any of you none of this would've been possible, much less fun. We do still have a couple of shows on the calendar before it's all said and done, so check out the dates and try to make it out if you can. Also, be on the lookout for various collaborations and other musical experiments from all of us in the future, we'll keep ya posted. Make sure to keep checking out the Higher Hands (featuring Larry, Marty (Skels), Jay Crawdads and The Funk Doc on the sax) at www.myspace.com/thehigherhands and on Thursday nights at Armadillos in Annapolis, MD, who knows ya might see other Prisms there too!

Thanks again for all of your support!

Seed Is. . .'s formula for musical success is it's ability to draw from the diverse backgrounds of all of it's members. The Seed Is. . . family consists of, soulful bassist and vocalist "Nikki" who conveys the soulful delivery of Nina Simone and raw emotion of Sinead O'Connor; folky funk vocalist "Alexis" whose delivery is a silken N'Dea Davenport, opera soul vocalist "Anwei" who is a downtown Katheleen Battle; conscious spoken word artist "Mike Peace" who possesses the timeless relevance of Gil Scott Heron and the skills of KRS One.. ; trumpet player "Big T" evokes the laid back nature of Miles Davis and the blazing hottness of Arturo Sandavol; the earthy guitarist and vocalist "Biggs" who is influenced by the likes of Chuck Brown and Peter Tosh; and finally the wild percussionist and drummer "Dawg Face" who is an extreme mixture of Tito Fuente's ethnicity coupled with Lars Ulrich's straight rock.

Six innovative musicians combine skilled lyricism and a tight jam band to create a progressive definition of Hip Hop that has the “universatility” to appeal to all audiences. Written Prisms are influenced greatly by the music of The Roots, Santana, Outkast, Herbie Hancock, De La Soul, Miles Davis, The Meters, Jimi Hendrix, A Tribe Called Quest, Muddy Waters, and Soulive just to name a few. They only need your interest for one moment • the present • and will fill that moment with a fusion of meaningful music that is guaranteed to make you catch the funky leg. On July 1st, Written Prisms released their new album, Ellipsis, to an audience of over 500 people at the East Coast's newest music venue, the Rams Head Live! in Baltimore, MD. They were not only one of the first local unsigned acts to headline the club, but the turnout yielded was far beyond what is expected from an area band. At over 78 minutes in length, Ellipsis is an innnovative trip through the many diverse musical influences that each member of the sextet draws from, as well as the daily operation that is everydayness. Moving slyly between jazz, hip hop, funk and even afro-beat grooves, the album has something for every music lover without losing it's cohesive sound. Ellipsis has received overwhelmingly enthusiastic reviews from several industry publications since it’s release in July 05. Greg Yost, columnist for the definitive Baltimore/DC Metro Area music magazine, Music Monthly, called the WP’s “…one of the best up-and-coming groups in the Baltimore area…Not only do the boys from Written Prisms prove that they have the mic skills to be labeled legitimate hip hop artists, but these guys are great musicians who have an excellent command of a wide variety of styles.”

Their live performances are strong and energetic, as they clearly reflect the diversity of their influences by blending creative concoctions of music as they present their positive message.
